DHR Health opens first functioning Level 1 trauma center south of San Antonio
People who suffer some of the most life-threatening injuries, such as those which result from car crashes, blunt trauma (striking or being struck by an object), serious falls, or gun shot or stab wounds, finally have the highest level of life-saving medical care available in the Rio Grande Valley.
On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, DHR Health leaders in Edinburg announced that their emergency department had achieved a functioning Level I trauma care capacity, making it the first hospital system south of San Antonio to reach that gold standard in medical care.
The emergency department at DHR Health is the primary entry point for most patients. Individuals are evaluated and stabilized in its designated trauma area before getting transferred to a different area of the hospital to receive additional medical care. DHR Health has received trauma patients from all across South Texas, including Brownsville, Rio Grande City and Falfurrias.
